£500 Charities - Dementia UK

When we initially talked about what we wanted IDo to be about we very much wanted to consistently be able to donate to lots of different charities and organisations and for the choice to come from our members, not us.

So with that in mind, '£500 Charities' was born.  The idea was that each time our funding pot reached £500 we would ask our members to nominate a charity that was close to their hearts.  We would then open it up to all members to vote on which one they would like to see the donation go to.

We had our first '£500 Charities' vote back in October of last year with the money going to the fantastic Kidscape Charity and we are delighted that we have now just had our second vote!

This time round one of our lovely members, Laura Rhodesy nominated Dementia UK and we have to admit, many of our members spoke of personal experiences with family so many jumped at the chance of voting for them too..

Dementia UK provides specialist dementia support for families through our Admiral Nurse service. When things get challenging or difficult for people with dementia and their families, Admiral Nurses work alongside them, giving the one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions people need. The unique dementia expertise and experience an Admiral Nurse brings is a lifeline - it helps everyone in the family to live more positively with dementia in the present, and to face the challenges of tomorrow with more confidence and less fear.

Here's a little bit of why Laura nominated Dementia UK..

"I have watched my Mum deal with both her parents suffer from this horrible illness.  Not only do carers have to deal with the emotional side of grieving for their loved one who is slowly disappearing but they also have to cope with the practical side of making sure they are cared for.  The parent becomes the child and the role reversal is really challenging.  As much as family try to support, we all know how busy and stressful all our lives are, plus we have also been grieving our grandparents too.  Dementia UK provides nurses to support the families in their journeys.  My mother Fiona said "In the early days of grandpa's illness we had a lovely nurse Jenny who supported Babsy and me, also she introduced us to a support group to join. Gentle encouragement is what I remember and kindness making you feel like you're not alone. It does become a bore to everyone around you in the real world."

This is Babsy, celebrating her recent 90th birthday, the carers get paid very little for their invaluable jobs, and her carers always do it with such good humour and spirit, it's great to see Mum with such a good support network!!"

We are so happy that Dementia Uk is our second nominated charity and realise that so many of us have family members that have been and are currently affected.  We are so proud to be able to support a charity that is doing such incredibly vital work.

On a separate little note, putting these blog posts together is when the impact of what this community is doing, really hits home.

Shouting about these wonderful organisations and being able to donate amounts of money that are often not possible to do individually.. this is where the strength of our community really shines.. being able to make a bigger impact by coming together. Thank you to all our IDo members for nominating and voting.. we can't wait for the next one!!

You can become an IDo member for as little as £3 a month so if you fancy joining our community then head to our MEMBERS page now!
